Eclectic group shows and dynamic gatherings are the norm at The Loft at Liz’s. A Month of Music, which will be no exception, is a fusion of musically inspired art and live musical performances from a range of genres each Wednesday throughout the month of March.

Music and art are at the heart of nurturing relationships among communities and people of different backgrounds, this exhibition will attempt to explore and form those ties. The opening reception for the exhibition will be held on February 27, 2010 from 7 pm to 10 pm and will run through April 6, 2010, featuring the works of artists Deborah Gillman, Antonio Guerrero, LarK, Stephen Rowe, Juan Rosenfeldt, Joanna Garland, Phillippe Stella, Silver Warner and jewelers Monique Birault, Alexander Dukes and Leslie Barrett.

The music events will be held on each Wednesday of the month and will feature a different genre each evening. The doors will open at 7:00 PM and the cover for all of the events will be $15, or only $10 if you bring a beverage or dish to share. This is a limited capacity event, so please RSVP by purchasing your tickets online by credit, or skip the service fee and pay by cash or check by calling 323.939.4403 x 6. February 27th – Opening Reception
– The Art of Sound presents the music of No’a Winter Lazerus and live painting by Louis Cannizzaro. No Cover.

No’a creates for film, television, visual art, installation art, music recording projects and live performances. His work has been tied to the films 300 and Watchmen, to films for PBS and he is Grammy nominated for his work in music recording and production.

No’a is known by his peers as a musical artist who can go any direction creatively with originality, innovation and a unique sonic approach. From Indie and Alt to Neo-Classical to Ambient and Spectral Sound Sculpting, he is recognized for dancing with many genres, instruments and styles.

Live No’a can be seen at unique events as one half of “The Housepainters” along with artist Louis Cannizzaro. Louis paints found objects while No’a creates with found sounds.

March 3rd – An Evening of Moroccan Bliss
– An ecstatic evening, featuring Loud Oasis, weaving Moroccan rhythms with warm jazz undertones and melodies that will ignite the fire in your soul and leave you dancing for more.

With its exhilarating rhythms and rich mixture of musical genres, instrumentation and cultures from around the globe, Loud Oasis reaches out to different worlds with boldness, character and strength…”Rare, sacred, unique, entrancing and fearless” are words that people are using to describe this artistic work that joins sacred world music with western contemporary culture.

From sold out shows at large venues like Disney Hall, Royce Hall, Unesco and Symphony Space, to an intimate evening with us at Loft at Liz’s, in celebration of the just-released Loud Oasis album. A memorable night not to be missed. Featuring MoMo Loudiyi, C.C. White, Hussain Jiffry and Patrick Richey.

March 10th – An Evening of Chamber Music & Opera
– Featuring works by composers Bela Bartok, Francois Couperin, Tom Johnson and Gernot Wolfgangperformed by Nico AbondoloJudith Farmer and Sara Parkins.

– Opera Singer Rachel Staples accompanied by hang drum musician Bruce Cana Fox.

Bruce Cana Fox is a musician, a drum circle facilitator, whitewater guide and aikido instructor. The hang came to him shortly before he retired from a career as an engineer, and now takes over a significant portion of the performing life.

Rachel Staples is a performer, musician, composer, songwriter and teacher.  Rachel was born in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, achieved her BA in Music and BS in International Affairs from Florida State University, and has been living in Los Angeles for the past 6 years.  Rachel’s unique style of experimental, post-millennial operatic jazz has mesmerized audiences from coast to coast.  Rachel is the owner of OperaTune Vocal Studios in Beverly Hills, and she works in Admissions for The American Musical & Dramatic Academy with campuses located in Los Angeles and New York City.

March 17th – Brazilian Jazz Night*
– Carol Bach-y-Rita (vocals), Robert Kyle (reeds and percussion), Mitchell Long (guitar), John Leftwich (bass)

After laying out of the music scene for a number of years, Carol Bach-y-Rita had taken a dive back into the pool with this recording, and with 2 beautiful working groups in Los Angeles – the band on my CD, and my “Sambalicious” group w/ Robert Kyle on Reeds and percussion, Mitchell Long on Guitar, John Leftwich on acoustic bass.

Jazz, Brazilian music and Salsa are her great loves. She sings mostly in English, Portuguese and Spanish. US venues include: repeat engagements with both The Monterey Jazz Festival and The San Francisco Symphony under MTT, and countless jazz venues and festivals. I’ve also worked and toured extensively throughout Europe and Japan.

Bach-y-Rita has been delighted to work with a number of wonderful musicians over the years, both locally and abroad, including: Bill Cunliffe, Mark Levine, Rique Pantoja, Ricardo Silveira, Joshua Redman, Kleber Jorge, Michael Spiro, Michael Tilson Thomas, Harold Jones, Bill Berry, Bruce Forman, Jacky Terrason, Peter Apfelbaum, Dave Carpenter, Ricardo Del Fra, Dado Moroni, Massimo Farao, Alfred Kramer, Pietro Leveratto, The Cross Hart Experience, Edwin Livingston, Larry Steen, Albert Bover, Carlos Oliveira…

March 24th – A Night of Country and Western
– Australian Country Singer Stephen Rowe

-Country Soloist Shaun Mason has been toiling in the Los Angeles music scene for 25 years.  Some of his past bands include Coughing Fish, Gutter Swans, and The Tavernapples. He has been writing songs steadily since he was 18 years old, and they number far beyond his ability to count. Influenced by everyone along the way, his Country heroes are Buck Owens, Jerry Reed, and Albert Lee.

March 31st – Closing Event*
-An All-Star Rhythm & Blues Revue featuring Kevin Flournoy, Rob McDonald, Jay Gore and Eric Valentine

Kevin Flournoy has produced, written, performed, and recorded with many artists including Gladys Knight, Dionne Warwick, Donny Osmond, The Pointer Sisters, Hillary Duff, Jamie Foxx, The Jazz Crusaders, Boney James, Kirk Whalum, Mindi Abair, Harvey Mason, and  Ronnie Laws to name a few. He has been involved in performing and providing music for several TV projects including American Idol and the Roseanne Barr talk show which aired on CBS. And in the contemporary jazz genre, Kevin produced  “Harvest for the World” (Blue Note/Capital Records) for saxophonist Ronnie Laws and was recorded as a keyboardist on the latest Jazz Crusaders CD. More recently, Kevin just finished working on the All-Star Smooth Jazz Cruise 2008 where he played keyboards for several shows backing smooth jazz artist such as Larry Carlton, Boney James, Norman Brown, and Paul Taylor.

Rob McDonald honed his skills while working local clubs and in national touring productions of “Your Arms Are Too Short to Box with God” starring Jennifer Holiday, and “The Wiz” starring Grace Jones, Peabo Bryson, Tony Terry, Cece Peniston, and Howard Hewitt, McDonald began to attract the attention of other national artists including, Brenda Russell, Pattii Austin, Jeffery Osbourne, Chaka Khan, Marion Meadows, and Jeff Lorber. A two-year touring engagement with Johnny “Guitar” Watson, performance opportunities with Billy Preston, legendary music icon, Tom Jones, a Tonight Show appearance with Toni Braxton, and European engagements with The Funk Bros, George Clinton and the Al McKay All-stars are among career highlights. Currently, McDonald is in his third year of touring with Grammy award-winning guitarist, Norman Brown, whose 2008 Summer Storm tour is set to include guests artists, Chante Moore, Paul Taylor, and Alex Bugnon.

McDonald, counts among his early influences such greats as Larry Graham, Sly Stone, Johnny “Guitar’ Watson, Bootsy Collins, Stanley Clark, Louis Johnson, EW&F, Louis Satterfield, is a compilation of versatility, resulting from over 30 years in the music industry.

Jay Gore is the hot lead guitarist who plays in Mindi Abair’s band. An in-demand session player in Los Angeles, he has played with artists as diverse as Hilary Duff and Lauryn Hill, as well as doing studio work for a variety of renowned artists of different genres. Jay has also written/co-written songs that have been featured on hit TV shows, 90210, Miami Ink, American Dad, E.R. and Party of Five.

Soon after relocating to California, Eric Valentine became one of the first call drummers in the contemporary jazz circuit. Currently he is touring with ex-TOTO member and legendary guitarist Steve Lukather.

Audiences world-wide have enjoyed the magical quality of Eric’s musicianship, having performed with superstar artists Patti Labelle, Erykah Badu, Stevie Wonder, Ian Anderson (from Jethro Tull), Doug Aldrich Jonathan Butler, Dionne Warwick, Patti Austin, Jeff Lorber, David Benoit, Music Director for Jonathan Butler and Stephanie Mills, Gerald Albright, Kirk Whalum, Maysa Leak, Regina Bell, Chris Botti, Everette Harp, Eric Marienthal, Nick Colionne, Najee, Yolanda Adams, David Pack, Darryl Coley, Mindi Abair, Everette Harp, Wayman Tisdale, Rick Braun, Peter White, Steve Weingart and many others.
