A Los Angeles native, Shana Mabari studied at l’École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris (1990), École Parsons à Paris (1990), American University of Paris (1990) and Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles (1991). Mabari has spent many years working and traveling throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East and incorporates cross-cultural themes in her work.  Mabari has collaborated on several projects with Dr. Shinsuke Shimojo, leading psychophysicist at Caltech and participates in numerous science and technology events including the Neuromorphic Engineering Workshop and the Center for Neuromorphic Systems Engineering Retreat.  Mabari holds a patent for the design of ‘Dynamic Spatial Illusions’.  She encourages collaborations between science, art and technology and believes that to further contemporary art we must enthusiastically venture into other disciplines.

‘My installations open a true cross-section between art and science to reveal how physical stimuli is absorbed through sensation, visual perception and color contrast.  Through light photons, reflections, memory, and afterimages we experience our surroundings and our reactions to them thus illuminating the complexities of our biological composition.  As an artist, I cultivate visual stimuli by engaging information through the retina outwards towards the physical world, whereas scientists engage in visual stimuli information collected through the retina inwards and how it directly influences brain activity.  My goal is to bridge that gap and create a beautiful and seamless interpretation of our surroundings.’

Shana Mabari is a recipient of the Center for Cultural Innovation ARC grant.
Her latest public work “ILLUMINATED” will be featured on Santa Monica Boulevard in the city of West Hollywood (FEB. 2014 – FEB. 2015).
