Statement excerpt from guest curator Renée A. Fox
“Works in this exhibition use Nature to speak about Beauty and the Sublime in not only the natural physical world but also the gossamer atmosphere of human emotion. These artists address fear, separation, delight, awe, compassion, divinity, desire.
“Night is Sublime, Day is Beautiful”. Immanuel Kant saw the sublime as a slow, introspective and sometimes terrifying experience and Beauty as a fleeting experience of immediate gaiety. My opinion is that neither exists without the other. The concept of Beauty would not be possible if we did not have the capacity to perceive Sublime, and vice versa. As I see it, Beauty exists in every dark corner and painful moment, like the delicate crystal globe of a heartbroken teardrop.
The artists selected for this exhibition are my own tribe. They know intimately the quiet yet profound moments when, in the reflection of incredible beauty in nature we see ourselves more clearly. I’ve had the honor of exhibiting my work with most of them, and the pleasure of curating many into previous shows. Works in the exhibition include painting, sculpture, fine art ceramics and silk scarves, mixed media, drawing and installation.” ~ Renée A. Fox
