David Ross and Leta Davis have been collaborating since 1990. Their work has included pottery, a decorative hardware line called Artisan Knobs – in addition to creating music and children together. Their collection is inspired by lathe machined work and incorporates the surface attention given to woodcarving and copper work of the early 20th century. They have limited their glaze pallet to the beautiful bronze metallic black. The limitation of color opens up the possibilities for the surface and the cool/hot metal concept is an inspiration for both artists.
David began his pottery career in Los Angeles in the early 70’s where he eventually came to co-own the Potter’s Studio in Santa Monica. His work reflects a strong influence of Asian pottery traditions. David is not only a master craftsman whose discipline and refinement on the wheel are extraordinary but a glaze master as well. He is an endless experimenter. The last decade has seen him working mainly in the Arts and Crafts style. Nothing in the David Ross Ceramics Studio is ever static. Works range from outrageous slab tile to post modern highly stylized pastel forms.
Leta brings elements of her painting and sculpting to this work. She sometimes designs the piece fully in advance and sometimes she lets the piece which David throws tell her what it wants. Leta received a BA in Fine Art from Connecticut College. She developed a decorative art and mural company in Boston called Cariati. Her work was featured several times in HG Magazine and she has received commissions from the Copley Plaza and Shawmut Bank of Boston.
