ARTIST STATEMENT
Artistic expression has always been a process of discovery for me. I have worked in different media – music, performance, mixed media, painting and photography. The photography I have done lately has played with the concepts of identity, anonymity and the darker side of the “Other”. Some of this comes from my experiences straddling different cultures. Through staged scenes I examine social issues and their implications on a personal level.
Within this context, I played the part of Everyperson in the self portraits of the DoppelgANGER series. The aftermath of 9/11 directed my attention to voicing the politicized aspect of the American experience. From a Buddhist perspective, we are all connected. Most “primitive”, indigenous cultures understand this. Psychological archetypes also illustrate the capacity we have for both good and bad.
The lenticular works- “Transmigrations” – refer to the passing of souls across cultures, time and place. It also deals with the concept of opposites, showing how “plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose.” The lenticular juxtapositions give form to the ambiguities and complexities of our fear, wonder and joy.
