ARTIST STATEMENT
SKIN DEEP (2020)

Technology has allowed for ugly truths to reach the homes of the masses like never before.
2010 gave us just a peek into the future as victims of police brutality were becoming household
names as a result of cell phone footage being shared globally.
Like the actions of the people taught us during the civil rights movement, a big take away was
that: ‘We the people have tremendous power to bring about change.’
2020 has been a year of transition on a global level in so many ways.
Old structures are beginning to crumble.
The conversations on race relations, equal justice and respect for human dignity are at the
forefront of the discussions on a level like we have never before seen.
The signs are all there. I believe we are at a point in history where change is about to come and
love and unity will prevail.

Miles Regis is an award-winning, internationally celebrated artist whose works have been generously supported by the likes the Santa Monica Museum of Art, the Los Angeles Miracle Mile Art Walk, Intel, Adobe, La Musee Boribana in Senegal and numerous art institutions around the world. With works spanning mediums such as wood, canvas, and digital 3D, Miles has been featured in profiles on CNN, The Huffington Post, KTLA, and Extra TV to name a few. Miles relocated from Trinidad to Los Angeles at the age of 21 to attend USC, and graduated with Bachelor of Arts Degree in creative writing. Over the years, his creative expression has grown into a collection of art works that encapsulate his experiences and perspectives with thought provoking images focused on family, tradition, culture, and often conflicting societal outlooks.

“I believe there is a connection between the domestic and the sublime,

the commonplace and the spiritual, the material and the soul.

We live in a world fearful of differences. Instead of celebrating our unique individuality and the beauty that cultural differences can offer to society in general, we are fearful of anything we recognize as being foreign to our norms. My goal as an artist is to combat such arrogance and dispel the preconceived myths and stereotypes that cloud our perceptions.

As a Trinidadian born African-American man, I choose to commentate on the volatile landscape of global race relations.  Living in Los Angeles has provided me with interesting perspective on our socio-ethnic landscape.

With an almost ‘outsider looking in’ perspective –  and the vantage point of having been raised in a nation with a black majority  –  I want to  present a thought provoking view of my current cultural landscape.  Tension is used as a means of healing in my work. I aim for the jugular as I confront important issues regarding social relations for the X generation, iKids and beyond.

I embrace change, growth and open-mindedness, so that my children and yours may come closer to knowing a racial equality I know we all strive towards.

BIO

Based in Los Angeles, Miles Regis is a Trinidadian-born artist whose work taps into the emotions of the exotic cultures of the world and presents them in ways that are relevant to today’s modernized society. His work has appeared in association with CNN, NextAid World’s Day, CCH Pounder (Avatar, The Shield), Nicolette Sheridan (Desperate Housewives), American Rag Cie, Senegal’s La Musee Borindar, Isaiah Washington (Grey’s Anatomy) and several art communities around the country and throughout the world. With a style reminiscent of master painters such as Basquiat, Pollock, Gauguin, Dali, and Rivera, Miles’ imagination is saturated with notions, ideas, and images, reflective of a world filled with conflicting interests. To that effect, the artist has recently exhibited works alongside Shepard Fairey, Ron English, Gary Baseman and other artists as a part of Manifest Equality, a highly touted equal rights gallery and series of events produced by Yosi Sargent, former National Endowment of the Arts representative and head of the west coast publicity team behind Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. During the event, Miles’ exclusive backstage exhibit allowed him to impact change alongside notable celebrities like Marissa Tomei, Daryl Hannah, and Heather Graham.
