CO-LA-LA-LAGE is a Collage Artists of America exhibit showcasing members’ collage and assemblage at one of the Miracle Mile’s highest-profile galleries — The Loft at Liz’s. The juror is Shana Nys Dambrot, a noted art critic, curator and essayist. This Spring exhibition has no specific subject theme — the only requirement for CAA members is “to show your best stuff, gushing with originality and imagination.”
About our jurors:
Shana Nys Dambrot is an art critic, curator, and essayist based in Los Angeles. She is currently LA Editor for WhiteHot Magazine, Contributing Editor for Art Ltd., Art Editor for VS. Magazine, a featured arts writer and blogger at the LA Weekly, a contributor to Flaunt, Bluecanvas, and KCET’s transmedia culture program, Artbound. Formerly Managing Editor at Flavorpill.com and Art + Books Editor at LA CANVAS, other publications have included Modern Painters, Art Review, Artweek, ARTnews, the Believer, tema celeste, Angeleno, Art Asia Pacific, Coagula, and Juxtapoz. She has written essays for scores of exhibition catalogs and artist-monographs, curates a handful of exhibitions each year, and speaks in public with alarming frequency. A full account of her activities is sometimes updated at www.sndx.net.
Juror’s Statement:
“Liz Gordon and I were profoundly impressed with the submissions to this exhibition. A great array of styles and mediums exist within the collage continuum, from richly textured mixed media painting all the way through to sculptural assemblage. Some artists create, destroy, and repurpose their own reassembled raw materials, while others are dedicated to the magic personality of found objects and images. Painting, photography, construction and most especially all the hybrids in between conventional genres are pursued in this collage survey, with artistic intentions from the narrative to the minimal and modernist, landscape, portrait, cultural motif, abstract expressionism, formal poetics, nostalgia, emotion, and technical bravado. Collage is an analog process with exceptional resonance to our digitally-fueled hyper-juxtapositional information overload. The final exhibition is a cogent, elevated, eclectic snapshot of the state of the art of collage.” – Shana Nys Dambrot

CAA’s membership includes art instructors, professional artists who exhibit widely, mid-career and beginning artists, art students and those who have an interest in and love for the art of collage.
CAA holds general meetings five times a year in which programs are presented by guest artists renowned for their work in collage and assemblage.
Member juried exhibits are mounted annually at venues ranging from galleries and museums to online and alternative spaces. In addition to meetings and exhibits, CAA offers workshops, newsletters, studio visits and special events.
