Artist Statement
This exhibition is selected metal art objects from a body of work created in Los Angeles from 2009 to 2010. Metal is one of my artistic passions; the other main one is painting. I find that working with steel is a meditative process. I enjoy its feel, the energy it seems to hold and radiate, and the beautiful variations of the way light plays upon it. The Vases are fabricated with steel plates that were salvaged from the recycle bin that students practiced their welds on. The Candelabra’s were fabricated from scraps of Re-Bar, and the Bowls/Ashtrays were made from old gears from a vintage airplane salvage yard. Each piece was welded, ground and polished to varying degrees and sealed with carnauba wax. The steel I-Beam sculpture was a chunk found at a construction site, painstakingly ground to shape and polished. It is rare to see mild steel polished, I think it is beautiful, and it is virtually indestructible!
