INSECTICIDE AN ART EXHIBITION May 15 – June 22, 2010

ARTIST STATEMENT

My process I work in a number of different mediums. My primary medium is hard pastel. A clean sheet of paper always inspires me. And pastels give a brilliant rich color, which is easy to blend into subtle gradients of light. My paintings reflect the same quality of light and color as my paper pieces. I use an airbrush to achieve the gradients of tone on canvas. Pastels and paintings come together     in my installation pieces. These “collage” and sculptural works are basically three-dimensional expressions of my flat art themes. Photography is an art form I grew to appreciate during my years as an art director. I am always inspired by what I see around me, especially living here in Southern California. Sometimes the fastest way to capture an idea is to take a picture. Having taken so many pictures some have emerged as art on their own and some I have manipulated into digital photo art works.

BIO
Mother an artist My mother was an artist. When I was a small child she sat me down in front of the record player, put on Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and told me to draw what I saw in the music. It inspired me then and I still rely on music to inspire my art. I studied art through the disciplines of printmaking and painting at Bard College in upstate New York and The San Francisco Art Institute in San Francisco. I wanted to
make a living as a fine artist and both of these institutions provided me with the liberal arts education to follow my curious mind and express myself visually through my art. Being an art director in advertising I spent 25 years as an art director/creative director in the advertising industry working on major national brand products. In those years I honed my skills of visual communication through the print and film media. I believe that working in the commercial world focused my thinking and helped to articulate my creative expression.
