Diverted Destruction is an ongoing series of annual exhibitions focused on the subjects of consumer waste and the environmental crises it leaves in its wake. The show features artists who work with repurposed ephemera and waste items to support sustainable use as well as provide commentary on the Anthropocene era. With subjects including oceanic pollution, climate change, geological affects and damaged ecosystems – the exhibition brings awareness and conscientiousness to the drastic effects mankind has long had on its environment while offering opportunities to consider alternatives to waste, repurposing everyday consumer goods in a creative fashion.
This year’s featured artists include Monique Birault, Kate Carvellas, Charles Dickson, Dwora Fried, Aaron Kramer, Marcos Lima, Monica Marks and Cynthia Minet.
Additionally, the exhibition features a longstanding tradition of incorporated public workshops where guests are invited to sift through various curated items with the intent of developing art from refuse. The gallery’s Projects Room becomes a veritable storehouse for artists to freely pick through and utilize provided materials or use their own castoffs to create fine art. These workshops are open ended though oftentimes a featured exhibiting artist is present to guide attendees in their creative journey.
The brainchild of curator Liz Gordon, who owns the attached antique hardware store below the gallery, is now in its 16th year. Each incarnation of the show tackles a subtopic related to the main theme, this year being the use of plastics. We hope you will join us for this truly important exhibit and its feature of 8 celebrated artists “diverting destruction”.
