ARTIST STATEMENT
I found creating work for this show to be an enjoyable challenge. For while I love re-purposing and redirecting materials, I’ve never worked exclusively from end-of-the-chain discards. I use a lot of wire and string in my work, and there’s plenty to choose from in my studio. For this show, however, you’ll find wire unwound from a discarded motor, and string saved from years of market produce. I also had the good fortune to find a stack of window shutters from which I’ve used many parts here. I will admit that I cheated – some of this work includes elements from my existing collection of materials. But I believe that I’m diverting destruction a little further upstream, rescuing my relics from garage sales and thrift shops along their path to the landfill.
BIO
Dave Lovejoy has been working as an artist and designer since the early 1980’s. A successful career as a graphic designer supported a long and leisurely arts education at several schools, focusing on ceramics. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in California and Oregon for over a decade. As a maker of things, his artistic direction has always involved an exploration of old, weathered surface textures, whether in clay, wood, or an assemblage of various media. Lovejoy lives and works in Pasadena, California with his wife, Vera, and teaches monthly workshops in raku-firing techniques.
