My work as a photographer and painter is influenced by the years that I spent living in Europe. I often turned my camera on the graffiti, advertising, and layers of wheat-pasted fliers that I encountered as I moved through new cities. The way people left their marks was visually appealing, representative of a history of events, and a way for me to understand a new culture.
I have exhibited the photographs that I made during my travels, but I have recently begun to revisit and rework the imagery. In this body of paintings, I collage older photographs with images culled from American popular culture—layering and recycling visual information in order to suggest new and unexpected meaning.
