INSECTICIDE AN ART EXHIBITION May 15 thru June 22, 2010
ARTIST STATEMENT
I take digital images of architectural structures, objects, landscapes and people. I frame them in the viewfinder to create interesting abstract compositions. Then I print in repeat pattern, on transparent sheets to create illusions that interact with light when hung slightly off the wall. From a distance the works function as abstract paintings. Upon closer inspection, recognizable shapes take form while the stitches holding them together add an element of time, craft and intimacy.
BIO
Gwen Samuels is a Los Angeles based artist. Originally from New York, Samuels attended Syracuse University,
where she earned a BFA in textile design. While raising a family, Gwen taught art and co-authored a book teaching classroom skills thru the arts. Upon moving from the east coast to the west, Gwen has been doing her art full time. Her work has been represented in numerous group exhibitions in Southern California and nationally. Her present technique began with the purchase of some antique lace at the flea-market which she printed on transparent film and began to arrange and hand-stitch. This process led to further investigation using a digital camera, creating multiple prints sewn together by hand, like patchwork quilts, forming compound images that hang unframed on the wall.
