LOCK/UNLOCK is an exhibit seeking to unpick the past, present and future states of security, privacy and protection. From the first known examples of cryptology dating back to 1,900 BC, the intricate workings of early crafted analog lock and key mechanisms, through to the present systems of cybersecurity, encryption and biometric authentication, society continues to grapple with addressing the question of what is worthy of protecting and how to do it. The participating artists, engineers, coders and historians of Lock/Unlock address the roles of authenticity, machine learning, quantum computing, ransomware, hacking and more within a certain future of ever deepening complexity.
Featuring Participants: Krista Blake, Derek Curry, George Dyson, Liz Gordon, Jennifer Gradecki, Debby Kline, Larry Kline, Laure Michelon (Studio MMR), John Peralta, Lena Alexandra Root, Brian Zuckerman

Hands-on lock picking will be taught by Dean of Instruction Bill Ragsdale of the Academy of Lock Picking Arts in a two-hour fun-filled workshop.
Learn the ins and outs of opening locks in a social surrounding. You’ll start with the basics working upward through a series of locks, a quiz, a game and then open mystery boxes in teams for rewards.
Your take-away includes the pick set, a clear practice lock, six pages of tips & secrets and a CD with four books and a one-hour video.
Participants receive a personalized memento in a concluding formal ceremony. After this event you’ll join a select circle: Those who can open locks without keys. You’ll become part of the lock picking hobby community called Locksport joining over 300,000 enthusiasts.
Our professor, Bill Ragsdale, is Dean of Instruction at the Academy of Lock Picking Arts. He apprenticed with a traveling locksmith serving rural areas of central California from a mobile lock shop. He then worked in Las Vegas at the firm manufacturing high security products for the gambling industry. He then formed a company supplying electronic door controls and ran it for the next twenty-five years. Bill is a Life Member of the Society of American Magicians, a Magic Castle member for 29 years and a member of the London Magic Circle.
