Robert Mack works in photography, film making, video installation, and painting.  His work has been shown in galleries and museums in the US and Europe, and has won numerous international arts awards.

His current photography project, the Wrapped Series, was first shown at the 29 Palms, CA group exhibition at the Spesshardt-Klein gallery in Berlin. Subsequently, it had a solo exhibition at LACDA in downtown Los Angeles. The work features portraits and studies of the human form wrapped in semi-opaque material.  The poses are often in bed or some other personal setting that underscores the intimacy of the work.

During these sessions, the artist also creates time-based work he describes as short visual poems. He calls these haiku videos.  Mack’s wrapped images strive to capture an instant when the ordinary suddenly reveals its deeper inner nature.

Mack’s next museum exhibition Not Guilty By Reason of Insanity is scheduled for June – August, 2013 at the Reiss-Englehorn museum in Mannheim, Germany. This show comprises over 140 photographs and a documentary film. For two years, Mack invited other artists to interact with the patients at an American maximum security hospital for the criminally insane. These intense, stark, black and white silver gelatin photographs by Mack and Grace Zaccardi received their first major exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art, and remain in the museum’s permanent collection.

Both senior curators of photography from MOMA and THE GETTY requested to see Mack’s photography, after which the Getty curator stated, “This is timeless, powerful, and important work. ”

Robert was born in Heidelberg to a German mother, Martha Mack and to an American father, Matthew Mack, a well-known plein air painter.  Robert Mack divides his time between Los Angeles, Berlin, and Stoneyfoot Farm, Virginia.
