ARTIST’S STATEMENT
SKIN DEEP: THEN AND NOW (2020)
It is tragic, but unsurprising, that in looking back at my painted images from 10 years ago concerning the intersection of White supremacy and its’ creations of systemic racism – they are just as pertinent today.  I was a little taken aback though, when I re-looked at the painting of terrified men and families with small children finding their neighbors left laying dead in the street, for all to see. It is precisely what we are doing together today.

In my ignorance of my own country, I used to think of this as a tactic of terror for foreign powers and this country’s “lynching days”, but now I realize that it is used here and now on a regular basis.  Political education via violent terror, laid out for all to see.

One of my hopes is to keep the conversation going… with art and words…

ARTIST’S BIOGRAHY (EXCERPT)
Franceska Schifrin has developed a wide international following, which is not surprising when you consider the geography behind her work. Having painted in Morocco, Spain, Uganda, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica,  Guatemala, Mexico, Bosnia, Croatia, France, and Cuba, the artist has ventured into realms and regions rarely visited in the visual arts.

With over thirty-five museum and Gallery exhibitions in the last decade (seventeen solo) Schifrin is, to say the least, a prolific artist. She is the recipient of the prestigious Getty Grant (awarded, appropriately, while Ms. Schifrin was on a four month painting sojourn in central Africa), and a California Arts Council Fellowship.

Franceska discovered the power of painting internationally on a trip with her father, a master painter, to Mexico in 1979; she hasn’t stopped traveling since. From the snipered streets of Sarajevo and the political turmoil and repression of Haiti, to the dreamlike stasis of turn of the century Cuba she doesn’t just imagine her work. Her canvases are imbued with the essence of a place.

Schifrin’s figurative expressionist work, in the past, was often remarkable for its portrayal of the horror and indignities of war, poverty and repression. Her current body of work represents a new phase, influenced heavily by the mysterious visions of Morocco, the gentle nuances of Cuba and the subtler flavors of Haitian life. Several persons knowledgeable of Schifrin’s painting claim to sense the perspective of motherhood influencing her recent creations. What ever the reasons, coupled with the work of the last decade, Schifrin has produced a remarkable collection, with a bold stroke and painterly understanding rare in today’s art world.

Ms. Schifrin’s work is included in the collections of Denzel Washington, Alfre Woodard, Angela Bassert, Magic & Cookie Johnson, JZEE, Charles Dutton, Peter Schnitzler, Liv Tyler, Stan Latham and CCH Pounder.
